Where history and living wood intertwine
Planted in the eighteenth century, the beech avenue at Bregagh Road has grown into one of the most recognisable landscapes on the island of Ireland.
Its extraordinary character comes from age, exposure and competition. The trunks lean and twist; great limbs cross above the road; and successive generations of growth have formed the vaulted canopy for which the Dark Hedges is renowned.
Yet this is not a static monument. It is a changing community of mature and veteran trees, each responding differently to weather, decay, soil conditions and the passage of time.
